Description
A Parian marble shell, possibly of similar form to these examples, is mentioned in an incription dating from 350-325 BC listing dedications to Asklepios (the healing god). The inscription was found in the god's sanctuary on the southern slopes of the Athenian acropolis. Actual examples in marble are rare and difficult to date. They were perhaps used to pour libations, or as perfume containers, or even as drinking vessels. Both of these shells have their detachable stoppers preserved. Traces of purple ansd yellow pigment can be seen on the shell on the left.
