Description
On permanent display at the British Museum this sculpture is a roman marble reworking of an original bronze piece, otherwise known as 'Fedele' or 'Spinario'. The original sculpture, built in the 1st Century AD, is celebrated at the Museo del Palazzo dei Conservatori in Rome, and this version is probably the best surviving copy to its original. With small holes at the base of the sculpture it suggests that it was used as a figure in a fountain.
Constructed under the Hellenistic style the attention to detail of the details, namely the thorn and rock in which he sits are immaculately detailed and serve as an homage to rustic countryside.
