Judges:  The prints shown were printed by MyMiniFactory as part of the submission review and approval process.  The 1-piece model was printed.  You can obtain much better results (indeed perfect results) with the 2-piece model which requires no supports. Also, please be sure to click the "Zoom" button below the image box above to see the full sized, uncropped images.  My images do not have a square aspect-ratio, so they get cut off. 

AUTODESK REMAKE

This is my Stage 1 submission to the #DesignByCapture contest.  For this submission, I 3D modeled my cordless drill using only Autodesk ReMake.  For my Stage 2 submission (submitted separately), I designed and printed a screw bit holder that carries up to 12 screw bits, pencils, or other accessories directly on the drill for convenient one-handed access.  

HOW I TOOK MY PHOTOS

The drill was photographed from all angles, and these photos were processed by Autodesk ReMake to generate the 3D model uploaded here.  To help the community achieve similar results, I will detail my process: I placed the drill on a table, and snapped photos at 5 degree intervals, circling around the drill at several different elevations.  My camera is a Sony A6300 with the 16-50mm kit lens.  I used a tripod and a remote trigger to get tack sharp photos.  The camera was set to manual mode with a small f/22 aperture, ISO 200, and fixed shutter speed.  The small aperture put the entire photo in focus.  The fixed aperture, iso, and shutter speed kept the exposure the same across all of the photos.  

To avoid refocusing the camera after every shot, I tied a string to the tripod and used the string as a reference to keep the distance between the camera and the drill the same every time.  

RESULTS

The results are spectacular.  I was shocked.  Autodesk ReMake was able to model every little detail of my cordless drill.  The accuracy of the model was confirmed in the making of my Stage 2 submission (submitted separately).  I will definitely be using ReMake in my projects going forward.

FILES

As required, I have uploaded the generated model in OBJ and STL format.  The contest also requires the model be prepared for 3D printing, so I have uploaded the model split into two pieces, such that supports are required for an FFD print.  Depending on the size of your printer, you may need to scale or futher subdivide the model.
