Pace beads (or ranger beads) are a useful tool for tracking distance traveled while you're hiking or orienteering. Print 13 of 'em & thread 'em onto a doubled length of paracord, using a bit of dental floss to pull the cord thru.
HOW TO USE:
Every ten paces, slide one of the bottom "tens" beads away from the knot. If you've run out, slide all the "tens" back up against the knot & move one of the "hundreds" beads up away from the knot. If you've run out of hundreds, slide everything back against the knot - congrats, you've walked 500 paces.
If you can find a soccer field, you can easily walk the length to calibrate how many paces you need to cover ~105m. Do some math, & you can figure out how many paces you need to cover 1km.
