Description
Culture: Neolithic Material: Gabbro Dims: L 13.4cm W 5.6cm Accession No: HCA 120 Current Location: The Hunt Museum, Limerick. This axe weighs 416g, has a full oval cross-section, curved edge shape, asymmetrical blade and a rounded butt. The blade, sides, butt and faces are ground and the blade, sides and faces are polished. The edge is sharp but chipped. The blade area is defined by a higher polish. The faces are well ground. A few areas of remnant pecking are both faces. the findspot is Knockderk, Limerick. Gabbro comes primarily from Co. Tyrone. Many gabbro axees found in Ireland were imports from Cornwall.
