Your child has an interest in making things move? You have a 3D-printer? You want to provide the ultimate customisable toy to teach your child about gear ratios and mechanics? Look no further than the MechMags!
These are printable gears mounted atop of a base that has room for a magnet inside. That way you can arrange working gear mechanisms on your fridge, a magnetic pinboard, a workbench... you get the idea. Any number of teeth between 10 and 30 is available. Any orientation on the plane of the table is possible, the gears even work on a curved fridge door. You can also stack multiple gears on top of each other to create even more complex mechanisms. And at the end of it all, you can place the "Effect"-Gear, which has easily printable fan blades inside, that, depending on your mechanism, can transform a small movement of your hand into a whirlwind.
If you have any suggestions for more "effects", be sure to drop me a message and I will try to make them a reality.
Be sure to use a shell of at least 1.5mm for the "base"-part, that way the shoulder for the bearing comes out better. The only other part requiring special attention is the "effect"-gear. Please refer to the pictures for more into about the orientation. They tell more than a 1000 words. Any other print specifics like layer height, infill, material are completely up to you. The parts in the pictures were done in 0.2mm, 10%, PLA. For the assembly of one base with one gear attached you will need the following: 1x 623ZZ bearing 3x M3x20mm bolts to attach the cover to the base and secure the bearing 1x M3x30mm or longer. If you want to stack gears, it will need to be at least 45mm long for two gears. 4x M3 nuts 1x 8x2mm round magnet (optional) 3x 3M SJ5302 (7.9x2.2mm) Bumpon Stickers to eliminate slip on vertical surfaces The way all this comes together is outlined in the last picture, as a hand drawing. Again, those pesky words would just get in the way. The half- and full spacers can be used to stack two gears (half) or align another gear with the upper one of a stack (full).
