SPOOL HOLDER SYSTEM
I designed a modularly system with multiple elements that can be extended and combined at choice.
There are only two valid and easy ways to keep stock filament rolls always accessible: sliding or rotating the active one. I choose to develop both systems together, as they each offer specifics advantages and disadvantages.
Sliding directly on wood is not possible, because stock rolls faces rest on it, we then need to create a deported axis. As we need to place two rolls for a two extrudes printer, a 60cm (24”) metal rod seems to be the best choice to keep a full access to stock rolls. 60cm is also the minimum width of a printer, nice!
I choose a stainless rod of 8mm diameter that is sturdy enough, cheap and easily available as commonly used for 3d printers.
I create supports wherein we can secure ends of rod with 3mm screw and nut, and some roll supports that we can easily set in place and slide. I took in account shelves brackets: we only have to lightly pull support to pass them.
The optional bucket shaped support need four 8x22x7mm bearings (commonly used for skateboards) and 3 to 3.5 x 25 to 30 mm self-drilling screws if not glued. It may also be usefull to store pencils, smartphone, eyeglasses, drink ...
The base component is the same sturdy but easy to snap on 8mm rod holder that can be printed flat without support with fan on.
Little axis may be the same stainless rod sawn to size or PLA flat printed.
65 degree of rotation let a full access to stock. It can rotate even more, but no need.
If you better use your two hands to take your stock roll, I also designed a support that can temporarily rest in place when rotated.
You can easily design new practical things to hang to the base rod holder ! Why not a clip board for your "To do list" ?
