Description
This lion head used to be placed on the cornice of the drum of the Dome of the Florence Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore. According to Brunelleschi's designs, this lion was part of the decoration of the lower part of the dome.
Architecture was greatly reformed during the Italian Renaissance, taking its inspiration from Roman and Greek models from the Antiquity. If the use of the lion as a subject is not a great change - as it is one of the most popular themes in art - it is the style of the sculpture that marks the evolution.
