This marble sculpture was sculpted by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (born in Balenciennes 1827, died in Coubevoie 1875). In Naples, Carpeaux was in residency at the academy of France in Rome; he wrote about his sculpture "It's a young fisherman of 11 years listening to the echo through a shell and laughing", the piece, welcomed by the Academy of Fine Arts, became a large public success. The Atelier Carpeaux has since seen many reproductions and variants of the sculpture.
