Berthe au grand pied (726-783), nickname given to Bertrade (or Bertha, or Berte) of Laon, was the mother of Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great. She was born in May 726 in Laon, daughter of Caribert II. In 749, she married Pepin III King of the Franks (who founded the Carolingian dynasty). She died on July 12 783 in the palace of Choisy-au-Bac in Oise at 57 years old. After some years, her remains were transferred to the Saint-Denis basilica.
