Description
This column decorated with statues is part of the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris. The Cathedral was consecrated to the Virgin Mary and considered one of the best and finest example of Gothic architecture in France. The Cathedral, shows an abundance of sculptural elements such as this one, part of the eastern portal.
The eastern portal of Notre Dame is dedicated to Christ’s reincarnation. The Virgin Mary and Saint Elisabeth look at each other in order to announce the birth. At the feet of Saint Elizabeth there is a representation of a baptism, a prefiguration of the baptism of Christ by Saint Jon.
