Most mind flayer colonies are strictly opposed to using magic, and those who do so at the expanse of their innate psionic power are considered to be heretics and they are sought out and destroyed, but not so with the Deepest Dark Mind Flayers, who worship Chernobog.
Those among them who show a predisposition for magic, perhaps as a remnant of the inborn powers from host body in which a mind flayer tadpole was inserted, are given special treatment and indoctrinated into vilest practices of the Chernobog’s cult, but they always remain under the strictest control of the Elder Brain of their colony so that they can never achieve autonomy of thought.
Sometimes, after the destruction of the colony or some other catastrophe, Mage Flayers acquire free will and become a powerhouses in the Underworld.
