Description
Culture: Early Christian Material: Stone Dims: L 8.4cm W 4.5cm Accession No: HCA 688 Current Location: The Hunt Museum, Limerick. Partially complete mould for casting small items of jewellery. It is a rectangular stone with one broken end. One face has 2 valves for buttons or pin heads of spiral design. Each is deeply cut to a rounded point with 3 concentric steps. The outline of a third valve is visible. The central valve has an etched outline of a large ring. Two valves have the beginnings of incised pouring channels. Such casting moulds date in Ireland from Prehistory to Medieval times and are found in ringforts and crannógs. More.
