Description
Polished point-butted greenstone axe from Lofta parish, Småland. The point butted axes appear in Scandinavia during the Early Neolithich, c:a 4000-3700 BC, and are associated with the Funnel Beaker Culture. At some point, probably towards the end of the Neolithic period, circa 2300-1700 BC, someone has attempted to transform this axe into a shaft hole axe by drilling a hole through its narrow side. This enterprise was abandoned quite early on, perhaps the density of the stone was too much to handle.
