Athens or Attica (Greece), acquired in 1841
Marble, 410-400 BC
This banquet scene is not a realistic depiction of te everyday banquets, for the presence of wives at the men's symposium was inconceivable. Rather, this is a sacral picture type created for the portrayal of venerated deceased family members. This is further illustrated by the family group adoring the hero.
