Description
This marble funerary relief, dated to 3 AD, in the British Museum depicts two women with their right hands clasped together, a gesture generally used to symbolyze a marriage bond. The inscription gives their names as Fonteia Eleusis and Fonteia Helena, identifying them as freed slave women of the gens Fonteia, a plebian family of Rome.
